NMA1 : Portfolio Gallery

Using SketchUp, we began construction of our ePortfolio Gallery today.
1) Convert your Principles of Design Photoshop documents to .jpg.
2) Open a new SketchUp file.
3) Go to the online Google 3D Warehouse and find a picture or gallery frame and Download to model.
4) Place it in your scene, press the space bar, use the select tool, double click on the frame and paint the background of the frame black.
5) Copy and Paste the frame 6 times,
6) Import your POD images and make sure you import "Use As Image" and insert each one into a frame.

To get away from all of the tourist's foot prints, I got up early and hiked for over an hour out into the Sand Dunes of Death Valley, CA. The beautiful leading lines in the sand really caught my eye along with the vibrant colors and soft shadows.

My polarizing filter really kicked in the blue in the sky and I also bumped up the orange a little in the white balance to increase the saturation of the sand.

Our photography club went to Olvera St. on Saturday and I walked down to China Town and was inspired to leave my lens open and catch some cool lights. I used a small tripod, set the self timer to 2 seconds so there would be less camera shake, and used Shutter Priority, TV on Canon and S on Nikon and set the time for 1.3 seconds, and I caught two buses blazing by.

Smooth Water Photo

This photo of the Kern river came out pretty cool. I didn't have a neutral density (ND) filter, so in order to get the smooth water effect I, put on a circular polarizing filter to cut a couple of stops of light, the ISO was 100, I set the f stop to 22, and the shutter speed to 1 second, which was as slow as I could get it without completely blowing out highlight detail.

Designed by: Scott Robertson, design student at Camden County College, in Philadelphia

Initial approach: He started with the color scheme. The client's specialty is photos of graduating high school seniors and the school colors are red and white, so he decided to use only one color. Deep red contrasts well with white, which makes it very readable and also inexpensive to print. Using the school's colors increases a positive response from most people involved with the school as well.

Typography: The "WS" is done in Kon Tiki Enchanted from JAW Fonts; Scott used Adobe Illustrator to join the two letters together. The result is elegant but still personal, rather than a slick and corporate one, which is just what a small-town photographer needs.
